“Growing up I was always interested in gangster films”, says director/co-writer Ryan Noel, “but I wanted to make a different kind of film, one that took all the wise-guy stereotypes like racism, sexism and homophobia to the absolute extreme – and then turn it on its head. To me The Notorious Newman Brothers is kind of like the Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf of gangster films, where the action takes place within the ridiculous banter, rather than out in the streets, yet there’s a similar sense of realism in the dialog. I credit that to the script being written more like an outline rather than a traditional script, allowing for greater freedom to improvise and capture real responses and reactions on camera.”
