The last couple months we've hunkered down with the director/editor, Ryan Noel, of "The Notorious Newman Brothers" to help him nail down the editing and pacing of the film. It's been a long time coming but this little puppy that we star in and co-wrote is just about ready for public consumption!
"The Notorious Newman Brothers" is a mockumentary style satire on gangsters and the ethics of documentaries and it's funny as shit - or at least we think so!
We'll hopefully have more about the Newman Bros. real soon....
Well the New Year started off with a bang as we just got a great review from Alan Dale of Blogcritics.org - not only is it positively effusive about Confusions of an Unmarried Couple, and extremely well written, but it's a Fresh Tomato reading for us as well. CLICK HERE for the full review!
Naomi Johnson with Pablo Escobar Jr.
A great 4 days in New York at the Queens International Film Festival got even better when we arrived home to find out that we won for BEST PRODUCER for "Confusions of an Unmarried Couple". It was a terrific time with highlights including: partying with Pablo Escobar Jr. (yes, that Pablo Escobar) and wiggling our way in to a VIP party for Joe Estevez (brother of Martin Sheen). Many thanks to Festival Director Marie Casteldo for putting on a great festival and for treating us like gold! Can't wait to rock the shit out of NYC next year!!
We're pleased to announce our New York Premiere at the Queens International Film Festival. It looks like we've got a pretty good slot for "Confusions of an Unmarried Couple" which will be screening at 12:00pm on Saturday, Nov 8th at the Bellaire Theater - which is the "centerpiece" of the LaGuardia Crowne Plaza Hotel....nice!!
So come out to the screening and you'll have plenty of time for weekend revelry afterwards! Tickets are $8 and Brett and I will be there! Click HERE for more details and to book your ticket.
See you in NYC!!
Over the weekend we got the good word that "Confusions of an Unmarried Couple" was accepted into the Hamilton Film Festival. When the Festival Director, Nathan Fleet, contacted us to let us know we were in he said, "how could we not screen this?" - that's what we're talking about! Anyway, Hamilton (aka The Hammer) is only about 45 minutes from Toronto and the venue looks terrific so get out there and support indie film!
We're screening at 9pm on Saturday, Nov. 8 (venue directions at the site). You've also got to like that we're called a MUST SEE on the Fest's website, dig it!
The bro and I are pleased to announce that "Confusions of an Unmarried Couple" has won for BEST DIRECTOR at the recently completed Bootleg Film Festival in Glasgow, Scotland. Many thanks to Tom Wilton, festival director and fellow indie filmmaker for the honour!
You win some, you lose some...we found out that "Confusions of an Unmarried Couple" didn't bag the biggie at the Indie Gathering which recently wrapped up in Cleveland, but did manage to snag an "honorable mention"...we'll take it!!
We're excited to announce our Scottish Premiere of "Confusions of an Unmarried Couple" at the BOOTLEG FILM FESTIVAL in Glasgow! The organizers are putting together a great line-up and we're looking forward to it!
We just got back from vacation to find out about a great review from Rory Aronsky of FILM THREAT who was a big fan of "Confusions of an Unmarried Couple". FILM THREAT is one of the most well respected film sites on the internet so hopefully we'll feel there clout! Check out the full review HERE .
We're pleased to announce that our award-winning feature film, "Confusions of an Unmarried Couple", is now available for download on b-side , which is at the cutting edge of online distribution for truly independent films....many of the great films we've come across during the last year of doing the festival circuit can be found there. Check it out, you won't be disappointed!
As part of the promotion for our RHIFF screening we did a radio interview the day before on a local program called Take5 with Andrea Nene. The only caveat was that the interview was at 7:45am, which is insanely early in general but after a night of "festivalizing" it's just plain cruel! Anyway, it's all about suffering for your art - which we definitely did in this instance. The interviewers were big fans and there questions were terrific so we had to be on our game. You be the judge: CLICK HERE for the entire 10 minute interview - I think we kick in around the twelve minute mark, enjoy! Our thanks to the Take5 team for giving us some air time!
The week long filmmaker party here in Toronto that is otherwise known as the ReelHeART International Film Festival was fantastic! The truly indie films were great and the RHIFF organizers treated us filmmakers like gold. "Confusions of an Unmarried Couple" was the closing film of the fest and we didn't disappoint! It was an overpacked house and the libations were flowing freely - pretty much the perfect scenario to enjoy our flick. The after-party was a zesty affair which was capped off by us winning the ReelHeART Award for "True Indie Spirit" - awesome!
Thanks to everyone who came out to support the film and to those who didn't, you missed a doozy!
Hey all, we've been off the grid for a bit soaking in the summer and working hard. Our trip to the Detroit Windsor International Film Festival was excellent. The venue was terrific and the parties were top notch. They are really starting something special in the Motor City and were glad to be there! From partying with the ex State Senator and a stable of models to relentless heckling at Comerica Park and Motown, Detroit treated us right!
It's only 5 days until the ReelHeART International Film Festival gets underway here in Toronto. As the 'Official Closing Venue Film' for RHIFF and hometown lads, we've been hustling hard to promote Confusions of an Unmarried Couple and think it should be a packed house on Saturday, June 21st. If you're in town be sure to come to the show, we'll be there getting zesty and drinking it indie! CLICK HERE to buy advance tickets!
As we continue to promote our Toronto Premiere at ReelHeART on June 21 we got a nice push from Kurt Halfyard of Row Three who said watching Confusions is a "refreshingly awarding experience which defies expectations in all the right ways" and draws comparisons to some real heavyweight films and filmmakers, awesome! He also goes on to plug our RHIFF screening! Click on the link to read the entire review, it's worth it!
We try to make it out to as many of our screenings as humanly possible but sometimes it just isn't in the budget. So it's always gratifying to get feedback from organizers when we can't make it. Here's an excerpt from an email we received from Fest Director, Dan Paolantonio about our Flipside (UK) Film Festival screening:
"Your film went down a storm - laughs in all the right places and more than a few remarking that it was one of the coolest films that they had seen in some time!! Seriously, I wanted to say a massive thank you for your support of our festival - we were really honoured to include your film as part of our Official Selection' programme"
Can't really ask for much more than that!
We've been off the grid the last month or so promoting our hometown premiere like crazy but we got some more good news as Confusions of an Unmarried Couple has been accepted to screen at the end of June at the inaugural Detroit Windsor International Film Festival. Of course, we'll be traveling down for some good times and a Tigers game!
Good news keeps coming fast and furious for our film, as we’ve had 2 very quality reviews come down the pipeline in the last few days. The first one was from James Wegg (a Rotten Tomato critic - nice another freshy) who said "Couples of all persuasions—married, engaged or just kicking the tires—would be well advised to sit down together and venture into the world of Dan and Lisa" - agreed!!
The second excellent review is courtesy of J.C. Macek III, otherwise known as the World’s Greatest Critic whose biggest beef about Confusions was that "that the film leaves the audience wanting one more chapter, or, hell, a whole sequel if necessary" - he even suggested a weekly series! Anyway, check out the review if you get a chance as J.C. has a real way with words.
We got some great news yesterday as Confusions of an Unmarried Couple won for Best Screenplay at the Outhouse Film Festival held in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Our many thanks to event organizers...wish we could've been there!
Another fresh tomato review just came in from Robert Humanick of the The Projection Booth, which is no easy feat as he's a tough critic! Check it out as it's very well written and has some interesting insights. Thanks Robert!
Just got word we've been officially selected to screen at the Flipside Film Festival in Plymouth, England. Man, our commonwealth brethren really dig the film and we appreciate it! Don't know about when the fest is happening, yet, but hopefully it lands near the England International Film Fest and we can make a trip of it.
Oh yeah, we've got some other news but we're gonna save it for the time being, so stay tuned...
We got some great news yesterday, as Confusions of an Unmarried Couple will be screening in Baton Rouge at the end of the month as part of the Outhouse Film and Video Festival. We've also been nominated for Best Screenplay which is a bonus!
A nice perk to Confusions of an Unmarried Couple doing so well on the circuit is critics and fans alike are taking an interest in our catalog of brews. Check out this killer review from Anthony Thurber of Film Arcade who was a huge fan of our 2nd feature, Bums, and he didn't even listen to the much lauded commentary!
It's been a long road but Confusions of an Unmarried Couple is officially on Rotten Tomatoes and we're reading 80% on the "Tomatometer" - not too damn bad for a little indie film! If you get a chance check us out and make a comment.
We've got our screening time for Confusions of an Unmarried Couple at the Mid-Valley Video Festival (www.mvvf.org) in Salem, Oregon and it's a beauty! Not only is it a prime slot at 7:30pm on Saturday but it's at the Northern Lights Pub where they serve beer while you watch!
Looks like we'll be getting an early reprieve from this crazy winter we're having as Confusions of an Unmarried Couple has been accepted to screen at the Miami Underground Film Festival in March. We don't have a screening time yet but it looks like the venue will be the Miami Beach Cinematheque and the weather won't be snow!
The great reviews seem to be rolling in these days and we'll take them all! The latest is from Tony DeFrancisco of Film Arcade fame who had this to say about Confusions of an Unmarried Couple:
"Your new obsession will be the Butler Brothers and your new favorite movie will be this." That pretty much says it all now doesn't it? Thanks Tony!
Confusions of an Unmarried Couple has just received another excellent review, this time from Bill Clark of From The Balcony who rated our film even better than the acclaimed Juno - nice! Check out the full review where Bill felt after the screening "I had just discovered a stock that's about to make a run". We like that way that sounds!
Our great run of reviews for Confusions of an Unmarried Couple is still going, courtesy of Ryan Miller of Movies at Midnight who was a huge fan of the flick! Check out his full review at Geeks of Doom where he feels we're about to take the "slice-of-life, no-holds-barred, offensive-as-all-hell comedy world by storm" - dig it!
Got some great news that Confusions of an Unmarried Couple won for Best Feature Comedy and Best Actor at the Wreck- Beach International Film Festival, which we attended in August. It turns out that 'The Captain' likes to marinade the films in his mind awhile before making any decisions - and damn if that isn't fine by us! Ahoy Cappy, we'll be hoisting a few in your honor tonight!
Our latest review came in, and it was a beauty! Reviewed at FilmFanatix.com (click here for full review), we scored an A+ on her very in-depth report card. So like any overachieving students would do, we got drunk and praised our awesomeness!! Cheers dASH at FilmFanatix!
Simon Vallee
Last night after watching our buddy's new band, Edgewood Grove, at their debut performance we went back to polish off a few more beers with Simon Vallee at his studio. Simon was our wrangler when we hit the Swansea Bay Film Festival earlier this year. Last night, he played a rough cut of a tune he made in honor of our Welsh experience and it was a most triumphant song - we'll get it up on the site as soon as he cuts the tune. In the meantime check out his site and watch the videos - Brett shows off his chops as the "guitarist" in two of the videos.
Confusions of an Unmarried Couple is screening at the Asheville REJECTS Film Festival this weekend. It's a kick ass underground throw down in the South put on by a couple cool as shit lo-fi filmmaker extraordinaires; John Bennett and Shawn Lukitsch. Nicknamed the Trashville Film Festival, it runs against the city's mainstream fest and runs right over it. With Troma lord and king of trash Lloyd Kaufman being there, this should be a great and grimy party...damn we wish we could be there!
We just received exciting news that Confusions of an Unmarried Couple has been selected to screen at the 2008 International Film Festival of England. This will be our second visit to the UK. In June we screened at the Swansea Bay Film Festival in Wales where Confusions was nominated for Best Film and we were treated to quite a nutty lot of a crowd, many dark ales, and a very healthy nightlife. We will be hoping for more of the same this round, and are looking forward to everything except for the exhange rate!
For the weekend of October 11-14th we headed to Bay City, Michigan for the Hell's Half Mile Film and Music Festival. Confusions of an Unmarried Couple had 2 screenings, and the film kicked ass in Hell. We did some good dirty talking Q&A's after the screenings, drank to the wee hours, got our groove on in the Masonic Temple to some kicking bands. A great venue full of bizarre rooms, peepholes, and urinals that were so thin that you needed to be rail thin, or holding one huge schlong to hit the target! In the day time we delivered ourselves crusty as hell to the panel discussion. Thankfully the fest directors were also hung as fuck too, since they were the ones pouring the drinks. Over beers and grub with the Bay Arts Council chief, who schooled with John Malkovich, we exchanged hand-job jokes. All in all exactly what a fest should be!! It will definitely not be our only visit too Bay City. Thanks Alan, Jay, Chris, Kari, and Joy for the great times!!
